Libyan Political Settlement: Arab League Calls for Unified Positions

The Arab League called for unifying international and regional positions behind the settlement efforts sponsored by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on its various political, military, constitutional, and economic tracks.

In a statement, the Arab League welcomed the voting process that was successfully conducted by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), which was held in Geneva. This led to the selection of the new executive authority for the upcoming months.

The Arab League expressed its aspiration for the speedy installation of the Presidency Council headed by Mohammed Al-Menfi, and the formation of the new government headed by Hamid Dabiba. It added that it will help prepare the holding of the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for the end of 2021.

Earlier, UNSMIL’s Acting Head, Stephanie Williams, announced that Mohammed Al-Menfi was elected the new head of the Libyan Presidential Council and Hamid Dabiba was named as the new Prime Minister.

The transitional government will lead the country until Libya holds its national elections on December 24th.
